Diabetes Overview
..........................................................
Diabetes Type One:
This type of diabetes results from the body's inability to produce insulin. Insulin is the hormone or “vehicle” which drives the sugar into every cell in our bodies. Without insulin your body would not have Diabetes Questionsthe needed energy for life. Of the estimated 15 million people that have been diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S., 5 to10% are type 1 diabetics.
Diabetes Type Two:
This type of diabetes results from insulin resistance where the body is having difficulty using insulin properly as well as lacking the amount of required insulin needed for proper functioning. The majority of Americans diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.
Pre-diabetes:
This type of diabetes called pre-diabetes occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than a normal level but not high enough for a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. In the U.S. there are currently 40.5 million Americans who have pre-diabetes, in addition to the 21 million with diabetes.
Gestational diabetes:

When the body fails to produce or properly use insulin this is called the disease diabetes. The hormone insulin is a powerful converter of certain foods we eat. Insulin converts sugar, starches and many other foods we eat into the energy we need to fuel our bodies for life. What causes diabetes seems to elude our medical researchers and remains to this day a complex mystery. The concrete findings which seem to be found in those who have diabetes are environmental factors such as insufficient exercise, obesity and genes which are past on from our ancestors. Currently there are approximately 21 million adults and children in the United States who have diabetes. Of the 21 million who are estimated to have diabetes, 15 million have been diagnosed and the other 6 million people don't even know they have the disease. When it comes to determining whether a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, it is important to conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG) or an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). These two tests can diagnose whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes. AnestaWeb, Inc. recommends the FPG test because of it's less expensive and easy to formulate a diagnosis. FPG test: If the patient has a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dl this signals pre-diabetes. If the patient has a fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher this indicates that the patient has diabetes. OGTT test: If a patient's fasting blood glucose level is measured two hours after drinking a glucose-rich beverage and the level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl, the person tested has pre-diabetes and if the two-hour blood glucose level is at 200 mg/dl or higher, the person tested has diabetes.
